I think it’s bold, different and interesting. It’
s like something out of Bladerunner. Just imagine how different than anything else it will look on the street.
Anyone else share my enthusiasm for it?

You’re not the only one. I kinda love it. And I’m not a Tesla fanboy at all. This is the first thing the company has put forth that has ever piqued my interest.
But in general, I am a person who will pick something different than everyone else simply for the sake of being different, and this ‘truck’ is about as ‘different’ as one can get.

I’m glad they wanted to be more than a little different. I do wonder about that rear headroom though, they might have been better off making a trapezoid rather than a triangle.

Same. I don't hate it, but that triangular roof looks really awkward. I applaud anybody who is willing to make a car without 18 fake vents though.

It’s bold, different, interesting, and completely ridiculous.
I’m glad it exists, and
look forward to seeing them on the road, but I can’t see this being a widespread sales success.

Ya the triangle is odd but I otherwise like the wedge. I bet that ramp tailgate that retracts into itself is going to break though.

The A pillar peak bugs me and I’m very leery of what will happen when local techdorks get trucky-stereotypical Tesla fanboy flamboyance plus local truck douchiness can’t end well. At least it isnt lifted.
But props for being daring.

It appears that it would be bad at being a truck.
The cabin looks awkwardly shaped. The sight lines look bad. The windshield will make typical ownership harder(snow removal, etc). It will have pedestrian safety concerns. Oh, and it doesn’t seem to have an easily usable bed.
Is it different? Definitely. Are those differences beneficial? Doesn’t look like it.

I think they’re going to sell a lot more than we’re expecting because of all these reasons. Can’t wait to see one on the road.

I’m not sold on the styling yet, but I like everything else about it.
If the prices and specs are actually what he said, this thing is going to be an amazing alternative to a crew cab pickup, and for pretty much the same price.
I kind of want one. I’ll either grow to like the styling, or I’ll grow to hate it... but I’m willing to give it a chance.

You and I have very similar thoughts...
The only thing I have to add is that I’m more forgiving of ugly if it provides additional function. The Cybertruck is certainly trying to add new functions to a fairly standardized design.

I love it’s aesthetics. Not sold on the PV bed cover though. The bullet proof thing doesn’t make any sense whatsoever; why add all the weight/cost ?

Nope. I put a deposit (refundable) down. No idea if I'll actually buy it, but it is insane in a cool way.

I’m glad it exists, and look forward to seeing them on the road, but I can’t see this being a widespread sales success.
I don’t know, they’re offering something compelling for the price.
The cheapest one is only slightly more expensive than a base F15o crew cab, it has some neat features built in instead of being optional or aftermarket (like the bed cover and on board 110v power and air compressor and air suspension), and it should be more fun to drive than a base pickup.
The styling will have to grow on some people, I’m still not sure about it, but it’s an interesting option that gives most of the benefits of a pickup and most of the benefits of a SUV with all of the benefits of a EV.

It’s a bad design, I don’t understand how it’ll pass any pedestrian collision standards, and all those edges are gonna be loud as hell aerodynamically. Stupid thing is gonna whistle so loud at highway speeds.

Design matters.
How many people do you know would wear these?
CobraJoe
> davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

I know a few people who would wear those proudly.
Design does matter, but not everyone hates it, and the unique functionality of it might win over a few haters.
This might inspire other manufacturers to go for a “Cyberpunk” styled vehicle, and then we could all grow used to the weirdness just due to exposure.
But this is all conjecture. Personally, the shock value is starting to wear off, and it’s becoming more weird than ugly.

But just a few.
Not everyone hates it, but I don’t think many will be bold enough to actually own & drive one. If he just wanted attention with this, he’s got that. If he actually wanted to sell a lot, I don’t see it happening.

Well, I don’t know that many people... I know my wife would avoid it based on styling alone, but she’s a very “blend in with the crowd” type of person. (I prefer to have a car I can easily find in the parking lot).
I think they’ll sell more than you think, for one specific reason: price. If they can hold true to their “under $40k without discounts” base price, that’ll put it exactly on par with an entry level Model 3, and make it the cheapest 6 seater EV available. Add in all the extra capacity and features, and it looks like a bargain.
The styling might be a huge pill to swallow, but there’s enough there for people to take a second look.

Most people don’t want to stand out.
9/10 cars are black/white/gray/silver.
It’s not going to sell well (pay no attention to the number of $100
deposits - they made it that low so they can talk about how many they get
). I assume it will be almost
3
years before they make the first delivery.

But are there enough people who want to stand out? If they can steal 2 % of the 2018 full size truck market , they would sell 48k, about as many full size trucks as Nissan .
And that’s not considering any “new truck buyers” in the mix. Not having to pay to fill up a ~30 gallon gas tank might draw some buyers who wouldn’t have considered a truck.
They claim 1 year before delivery starts, but I wouldn’t take that on faith considering their previous performance on delivery times.

massive.

My mistake on the simple subtraction... I knew it was 2021, but I guess I forgot what year it was now.
I’m still thinking the fact that it’s a high performing $39k EV will help sales. The Model 3 costs the same, and it sold 140k units last year. It didn’t have the controversial styling, but it wasn’t conventionally pretty either.

He says 2 years, my money is on 2.5 or 3.
Just consider the percentage of Prius/Model 3 buyers that would actually buy one of these. It’s not many.
It will definitely bring some new customers to Tesla; I’m just having a hard time seeing that those numbers will be significant.

I really hated it when it rolled on stage last night, but after seeing more press photos I’ve come around to it. I really love sci-fi, futurism, and wedge shaped cars so this is actually really appealing the more I look at it. I wouldn’t ever want one but glad it exists to possibly inspire other car makers.
Also the original Bladerunner was set in November 2019 in LA and ending specifically on November 20, which is why this was released the day after that in LA . Musk is a big Bladerunner fan.

There might be a noticable portion of Prius/model 3 buyers who are wanting a truck or to upsize their current vehicle. But I’d bet there are more people who needed more room or utility than a Model 3, but couldn’t afford a Model X.
There are also people who would consider a crew cab truck, but don’t want to live with the gas mileage or wobbly ride.
Time will tell if those sales all add up to much.

I like that they tried to do something different, but I am not a fan. Particularly of the styling, but also some usability factor. A slightly more traditional cab and bedsides that don’t block all access to the bed would have made this much more appealing to me.

I’m sure there are plenty that could use a little more room, but few that would actually go from driving a reserved Model 3 to a CYBERTRUCK.
Yeah, we’re debating something that won’t play out until 2022. LOL
But for now, he gets the headlines (just like he did with the Model S prototype after the Taycan ‘Ring time dropped
).

I sold my Legacy GT to buy a Titan 4x4 Crew Cab. It’s a similar change in vehicle size and type. I did that because I got tired of the limitations of the small sedan. Now I can fit 3 adults (or car seats) in the back seat without compromising front seat space or cargo capacity. Others might recognize the benefit too.
I do hope the production version gets a little more realistic, that sharp peak on the roof is a bit much, but it really does get a lot of headlines right now.
